Hell On Wheels (DVD) Review

Hell on Wheels is a fantastic cycling movie.For those of us in the U.S. who listen to Phil and Paul on OLN and ESPN, its a nice break from the footage and commentary that we get every summer from the Tour de France.Filmed during the 2003 Tour de France, Hell on Wheels goes beyond the daily road racing to show us the behind-the-scenes agonies and amusements of two roomates on the German Telekom team, Eric Zabel and Rolf Aldag.We also get to see the bloody (literally) details of the spectacular wrecks and the muscular pain of riding all-out for three weeks in July.
2003 was an interesting year for Telekom as Jan Ullrich rode with Bianchi and nearly toppled Lance Armstrong who rode to a fifth consecutive victory.Fortunately the film avoids the unending accolades for Armstrong (well-deserved, but its nice to hear about other cyclists for a change...) and instead sticks to the day to day grind that the rest of the riders face.While Zabel was an outstanding sprinter; the film shows him in his career twilight, seemingly unable to come up with that flat stage win that all sprinters covet.Zabel suffers through the incredible mountain stages that are filmed in spectacular color and scale, truly giving the audience an appreciation for the grandeur of the Tour.In one scene the cameraman catches Armstrong, Ullrich, and Mayo racing up a steep pitch at an impossibly fast pace.Throughout the movie the cycling is accompanied by a great sound track that adds to the drama of the race.Non-cyclists may not be as excited by the drama of the race but I guarantee all cyclists will groove on the scene, music, and drama of Hell on Wheels!
